Two schools of thought

There are two schools of thought when it comes to teaching kiteboarding.
1. Power them up and let them get drag around until they understand kite power.
2. Use 3 meter kite lines to help new rider Warm up to Wind Strength, Wind Direction, Ride Area, Entries and Exits. These shorter lines help new riders get comfortable with the true discipline in Kiteboarding which is to Park the Kite and Edge. In the process new riders learn to Navigate.

Kite courses, Big Wave Riding

Kiteboarding courses
Kiteboarding courses
I am going to be painfully honest, there are Kiteboarders (85%)  Wave Riders, (10%) Big Wave Riders (4.9 %) and Huge Wave Riders (.01%)
Huge Wave Riders like Niccolo Porcella are "Native Watermen"...they didn´t come from other sports like Baseball or Foosbal, they grew up in the Ocean . They are prepared and trained, they know what they are getting into.  Huge wave riding should be left to Native Watermen. With that said a percentage of Kiters ride Big Waves. When riding big waves you have to avoid the Mummy Wrap!
The Mummy Wrap happens when kiters drop their kites in big surf. Here is a general break down:
1. The rider crashes first, the wave propels him toward the kite.
2. The kite crashes and the lines slack.
3. The rider gets tumbled and turned by the wave.
4. The lines wrap around the rider
5. The Wave hits the kite and tensions the lines...Mummy Wrap.
how to kite

Best way to avoid the Mummy Wrap is don´t drop the kite! If you do drop the kite in the surf, make sure
you avoid the lines by diving through the power of the wave. If you get caught in the lines you need to cut your way out with a kite knife or yank on the line which has the most tension in hopes of flagging the kite.

How to rig and Launch on a crowed Kite Beach.

How to rig and Launch on a crowed Kite Beach.
How to rig and Launch on a crowed Kite Beach.
Hey, most kite beaches are public and you can rig and launch which ever way you choose. A cross wind set up and launch can be done in 25 meters.
1. Lay the lines out cross Wind
2. Lay the kite on top of the lines
3. Connect the Control lines to the outside trailing edge of the kite
4. Keep the center lines under the kite connect them
5. Double check no lines are over the Control Lines and Launch
Again, most beaches are big and public so riders lay their lines down wind of the kite, they connect then walk cross wind...this method takes up about hundreds of meters. If you looking for the most efficient way to rig and launch, use the Cross Wind Set Up and Launch.

Big Down winders, things you should carry

How to do a Big Downwinder... kitesmethod.com
Don´t even think about doing Big Downwinders if you don´t have a Signal Mirror, a Kite Knife, Water and Multiple Line Lengths. Lite travels...if you are out in the deep blue and the wind shuts down you can signal a long way with a tiny mirror. People often think about using a kite knife if they tangle with another kiter...the reality is you will probably use it to cut your lines if one breaks. With a kite knife, a kiter who breaks a line can easily cut, retie and get back on the water. Multiple line Lengths give you range just before take off as well as along the trip. Of course riders should have a good camel pack as well as a water bag with a credit card and a bit of cash just in case. Dakhla Kiteboarding World Cup 2015

Late last night she checked in from the Punta Cana Airport on her way to Brussels. Sam is sponsored by Star Kites and will be representing them in the Dakahla Kiteboarding World Cup March-18-2015.
The purse is $90,000
Freestyle: US$50.000

This is the World Tour 2015 1st event and  will be held where the desert meets the sea,  Dakla, Morocco. The host venue will all start with the official wave and freestyle qualification event, March 18 – 22, followed by the Freestyle, Big Air and Wave official competition March 23 – 29.

The Freestyle, the Freestyle qualification event, and the Big Air competition will be held at the Dakhla Attitude Hotel Lagoon, known for its steady strong winds and flat water, which make it a pristine freestyle location. In addition Dakhla will offer the wave qualification and main event at the Foum Labouir wave spot, known for its long perfect right hand brake. The wave event, has the advantage that during this time of the year the probability of getting good waves and wind are extremely high. 2014 saw great conditions throughout the competition.

FAQ´s how to Kite Board, kite Lessons

  1. Q.Paul from the big island...long time windsurfer beginner kiter. I have had lessons, and read your book (excellent by the way) and I'm needing shorter lines.
  2. I have a Waroo 15 M (25 meter lines) and a GK Trixx 12 M also with 25 meter lines.
  3. A. Go with the lengths of 5m + 5m + 15m...this will give you 5 kite options per kite
  4. Here is more:
Most of a kite's range is in the length of lines it is flying on! Not many riders understand this and they end up paying physical and monetary price! How is it that an entry level rider can be comfortably working on his waterstarts on a 12 meter kite while expert riders are powered on the same 12 meter kites? Its simple, the new rider is using 15 meter lines.
  5. Q. Help me with the math. How do you get six kites out of one kite?
  6. A. Simple...The lines lengths of 5m, 5m and 15m can be used on their own or easily be attached together to make 15m, 20m and 25m lines. This is like getting 5 free kites!
  7. A 12 meter kite on 25 meter lines pulls harder for longer than the same kite on 20 meter lines or 15 meter lines or 10 meter lines.
  8. 1. 25 meter lines = full power 12 meter kite, great for lite winds, big air or radical action.
  9. 2. 20 meter lines = 11 meter kite, Super for strong winds and wave riding
  10. 3. 15 meter line = 10 meter kite. Great when learning water starts, or handling strong winds
  11. 4. 10 meter lines = 9 meter kite. Good for learning kite control.
  12. 5. 5 meter lines = 7 meter kite. Super for learning kite control and management.
  13. 6. bar to kite = 5 meter kite. Teach your friends on your kite. It is a great sport, share it!
  14. Q. Can I cut down some old lines that I'm not using?
  15. A. I cut lines all the time...here is the process:
  16. Cutting Lines:
  17. Attached is an image of the Method Universal Knot. This is the knot you want to make at the end of every line
  18. Step #1 : Remove lines from bar
  19. Step #2 : Hook lines on a nail
  20. Step #3 : Cut to desired length
  21. Loop and Knot:
  22. Step #4 : Stick the end of the line between thumb and fore finger...then wrap the line over the fingers to the first line between your wrist and hand.
  23. Step#5 : Tie an over hand knot
  24. Step #6 : Tie a figure 8 knot at the end of the loop
  25. Step #7 : Repeat the process on the other lines

What to teach in the 1st Lesson

When a new rider can Park their kite, they are ready to add levels. If a new rider can not keep their kite parked, they are not ready to add longer lines or more levels.
Learn to Kite Kites Method
Learn to Kite Kites Method

This 1st lesson should be taught on 1-3 meter lines. The new rider can make mistakes with out effecting other people on the beach. Once the new Rider can Park his kite, the Coach should teach him how to walk across the direction of the wind while keeping the kite parked. For more about the KITEs Method and How to teach efficiently and Responsibly email us at methodlodge@gmail.com
